Still Water and Quince Fair - Artist in Residence

An excerpt from the Gardening Australia Magazine.

Still Water is a beautiful, sprawling country garden built around towering natural red gums. Designed by Mary Skene-Kidman in 1959, the older parts of the garden strongly reflect her design, plant selections and colour schemes.

Present owners Rick Paltridge and Cathy Hughes have each contributed to the evolving garden. Rick’s interest in Frank Lloyd Wright, the renowned 20th century American architect, is skillfully exemplified in various stonewall creations throughout the garden. Cathy has converted the original mass plantings of iris and roses into perennial borders, adding lavenders, penstemons, valerian and salvias.

In autumn the fruit on the trees in the small experimental quince orchard are a beautiful golden colour and emit a floral-fruity aroma.

There will be regular tours of the orchard and the opportunity to purchase fresh quince preserves and products. Enjoy coffee and food vans, wine tasting, plant sales and related artworks.

Activities:

  • Daily tours of the quince orchard

  • Morning and afternoon teas

  • Light lunches

  • Plants by Carousel Nursery, Wagner’s Roses and Diggers

  • A variety of stalls including wineries, arts and crafts, quince preserves and produce

  • Artist-in-residence Catherine Fitz-Gerald

City of Burnside Artist in Residence

I’m so happy to continue the alphabet of fruit project as Artist in Residence at the City of Burnside 2020. The residency I did in 2017 at the Adelaide Central Market continues to inspire me and I hope you will continue to share your favourite family fruit recipies, savoury, sweet, simple or complicated.

Come and chat with me while I paint at the Civic Centre.

“Catherine's stunning works of art will be on display in the Cloisters area of the Burnside Civic Centre from Tuesday 11 January - Friday 5 February 2021.

You will also be able to visit Catherine, watch her work and ask her any questions you may have every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 am - 1 pm throughout her residency. “

Adelaide Central Markets 2017

I’m very excited to be the artist in residence at the Adelaide Central Market during SALA this year. This is not really an exhibition, it’s more like a sharing of an artist’s studio space within the Adelaide Central Market. I will be painting the ‘Alphabet of Fruit’ there three days a week for a month. For many years I have been slowly painting my way through the alphabet and I have just a few letters to go. My aim is to create a community cookbook illustrated by my paintings. But should A be for apples, apricots or avocados? A lot will depend on the recipes people share with me.

You will find me painting August 3rd to 26th Thursdays 11-5pm, Fridays 11-7pm and Saturdays 10-3pm in the south west corner of the market. Children are welcome to try sketching fruit with me but must be supervised at all times
