Water’s impact and absence explored by SA artists
Six South Australian artists are exploring water’s global and intimate impact on us, and ours on it, as part of a free exhibition being held during the 2019 Adelaide Fringe.
2019 Water Ways will highlight water’s physical forms and many moods as well as the effects of its absence, through each artist’s unique voice and personal experiences.
“Water has long been used as a metaphor for the inner journey, the passage between one state of consciousness and the next and now science is revealing its deep impact on our psyche and mental health,” said curator Catherine Fitz-Gerald, who is also one of the artists presenting works.
“Humanity’s industrialized ability to contain, constrain and change water’s state has enabled us to terraform our planet to an unprecedented degree.”
Earth’s water are connected in a vast cycle, recording and reminding us of eons of change, and each artist explores these concepts and more through very different mediums and techniques.
The exhibition at Fisher Jeffries Exhibition Space will feature Keren Seelander’s expressive, metaphorical mixed media paintings, Ursula Kiessling’s complex, naive deserts, Catherine Fitz-Gerald’s transformative abstractions, Rod Bax’s luminous wetland oils, Margaret Ambridge’s tender charcoal works on paper and Mark Fitz-Gerald’s photographic portraits of water interpreting water’s qualities and states in a world on the cusp of irremediable climate change.
